The Conscious Commute – 7:30am to 9:00am Friday November 23rd

An average of over 230,000 Aucklanders take public transport or cycle every day, and that doesn’t include all those who get out and walk too. So Sustainable Business Network Meridian and Auckland Transport have got together to reward all those sustainable ‘Conscious Commuters’. On Friday November 23rd between 7:30am and 9:00am, the GreenFleet Conscious Commute will be celebrating sustainable commuters by offering a free coffee & muffin to the first 400 conscious commuters. Come and have a sneak peek at the Sustainable City Showcase at The Cloud, Queen’s Wharf while you’re enjoying your breakfast!  This pop- up sustainable city will be displaying all that is new and cool in sustainability products and services, including transport.

The economic benefits of making streets more walking and cycling friendly.

Physical inactivity is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and some cancers. The growing prevalence of physical inactivity in Australia, along with the alarming rise in the number of South Australians who are overweight or obese, is putting an enormous strain on the health system.

Walking is an activity that will not just benefit the health system. Increasing walking will also provide gains in relation to economic vitality, climate change, traffic congestion, social cohesion and community safety.

The SkyPath over the Harbour Bridge is becoming a reality

Auckland Transport’s review of the SkyPath business case is currently being carried out by Ernst & Young.

We’ve seen a draft version of the report and have provided a number of corrections and additions.  We’re confident that SkyPath’s business case is very strong and we’re looking forward to progressing the $28 million funding and delivery arrangement proposed by the Public Infrastructure Partnership Fund.

And further to the news that Waterfront Auckland is spending $5.8 million on a walking and cycling around Westhaven Marina to the Harbour Bridge, it’s great to hear of a proposal to restore Shoal Bay to provide a direct walking and cycling link from Takapuna to the Bridge. While SkyPath users will be able to use existing walking and cycling connections to Takapuna, and the SkyPath isn’t reliant on this new proposal, it would be great to see the improvements suggested. See:  http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10839263

We remain committed to starting construction of SkyPath next year and will work through any barriers to success.

If you’d like to help (in any way, big or small), then please contact us.

All the best…
